Spring has sprung and so has the demand for allergy medicine. An allergy is condition involving an abnormal reaction to an ordinarily harmless substance called an allergen. Different types of allergens are dust mites, mold, grass, and pollen. Those allergens are considered aeroallergens or airborne substances. According to Acaai.org (or American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology) 50 million or ⅕ Americans suffer from allergies. Rainy springs can promote rapid plant growth and lead to an increase in mold, pollen, etc. causing symptoms.

According to Acaai.org if you sneeze, cough, or your nose and eyes itch and are runny during certain times of the year you may have seasonal allergies. In many areas of the United States spring allergies begin in February and last until early summer.

“When my allergies kick in I start to sneeze, have a runny nose, and watery eyes.” said Ty Jackson, A junior at LHS.

If you suffer from allergies and don’t know how to or can’t find a way to tame them or stop them you can keep windows and doors shut during allergy season; take a shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes after you’ve been working or playing outdoors.

“I go through a lot of headaches and hot flashes when I have allergies,” junior Taylor Shuler said.

According to AAAAI.org (or American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology)
About 70 to 80% of the North American population has headaches and 50% experience a headache every month. There are certain times when allergies cause headaches.

“Now that spring is here I have to use two different lotions to keep my skin moisturized,” Shuler said.

Atopic Dermatitis or Eczema is the most common skin condition found especially in children. According to AAAAI.org, it affects ⅕ infants and around 1/50 adults. According to AAAAI.org eczema is thought of as a “leakiness” of the skin barrier which causes it to dry out and become prone to irritation and inflammation by many environmental factors.

“It’s usually the pollen that triggers my allergies,” Jackson said.

According to ACAAI.org people with allergic rhinitis generally experience symptoms after breathing in an allergy-causing substance such as pollen or dust. In the fall the most common allergen is ragweed and in the spring the most common allergen is pollen.
