Welcome to Lubbock High School! We are so excited for the new year and can’t wait to keep you updated on Westerner World! On that note, we wanted to let you know about the new changes we are embracing this school year. The new changes are the new system, the light system in the hallways, the panic buttons in classrooms, the school day being extended to 4:05 instead of 4:00, loaner Chromebooks are now in the library instead of classrooms, and our new principal Mr. Espinoza as well as our new Dean of Teachers Dr. Lucas, we are so excited for you to join the Westerner family!
Now for the most important change, which is our new tardy policy. After conversing with Mr. Anderson, he has summed it up in a pretty concise and clear explanation (At the end of the year, we looked at Data and saw that the amount of tardies had increased since Covid. The admin decided to change the tardy system to give students more class time, so they can keep track of the tardies as well as not interrupting class time). If you are coming in late from the pool, ATC, the Lomax, etc., emails are usually sent out to teachers along with the use of the intercom to let teachers know what is going on. Kids coming from the ATC are usually stamped to let teachers know and admin can always fix tardies if needed.
Here are some opinions about this new policy:
(“It makes sense but it’s so stupid, if you’re late, you have to go to the tardy machine and if one machine doesn’t work, you have to go to all of the different ones on different floors and it becomes a whole thing”) An Dao, 12.
(I think it makes us more tardy because of the long lines, I was later than I would’ve been if there were more tardy machines at school, I see where they are coming from but it is not effective) Lucy Kunkle, 11
(I don’t understand it, it’s making people late by going to the machine and if you’re stuck in traffic, you can’t help it if you’re late) Lillie Ray, 11.
We hope this clears up any confusion and if you have any questions please feel free to ask any of the principals or your counselors. We hope you have a wonderful week!
