Well it finally happened, another movie that nobody asked for came out and surprisingly, it was very entertaining.
The only fault I can find in its 1 hour and 51 minute run time is that I would never spend money to watch this again. It is just another cop-out from Disney to not make anything new.
I know I’m being harsh, but trust me I’m going somewhere with this.
The movie “Freakier Friday”, a sequel to the 2003 adaptation of the famous story where a disconnected daughter and mother switch lives for the day and learn to care about each other, is a new addition to the Disney series of remakes that have occurred in the last years. It is very honest in its telling and doesn’t attempt to connect with its Gen Z audience a ton. There were only a few times in which this happened, notably the “elder-millennial” reference during the pickle-ball sequence.
The characters have many moments throughout the run of the film that seem like a genuine progression of events since the last film. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan (along with their respective younger counterparts played by Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons) deliver electrifying performances and they show the audience an in-depth understanding of each other’s character and the acting styles of their cast mates.
I seriously enjoyed the way the movie ended, but I must say (as I was saying before), I am a little disappointed as a movie goer. It seems very rare now to find a movie from Disney or any big major production company that isn’t a remake or an adaptation (or more extremely, an adaptation of an adaptation). It was good, but I feel that it is a waste of money not to see anything new or anything that has any significant value to the movie industry. “Freakier Friday” unfortunately won’t be listed and shouldn’t be listed as a new movie, it’s simply another sequel. Another excuse to bring retired actors out of retirement for the sake of cashing in on childhood nostalgia for movie goers.
Regardless of the obvious fault it has, the movie is a fine quality. My opinion on whether or not it should’ve been made shouldn’t stray you away from going and seeing it yourself. On top of the stellar performances it even has some very great music and a remastered version of the song “Take Me Away” prominently featured in the first movie by the band Pink Slip and several other nostalgic moments all fans of the original will love.
