School Lunch Food Review
For years people have complained about the school food. On paper, school foods are supposed to be quick, flavorful, and healthy meals for students to eat. I’m here to put that to the test by trying a couple of school foods and giving my most honest opinion. I interviewed some people to see what they had to say. Jayla Puente, 10, said “ I think pizza is the worst. Test Kitchen in the best food that they give us since it’s the food the culinary kids make ”. April Izaguirre, 12, said “ It’s alright for the most days but there are some days where they sell the same things over and the food is bland and unseasoned but for the most part is okay”. The school allows us to choose our meals from different lines so I chose what I had on my tray. On Tuesday September 25, I reviewed the first meal, which consisted of pizza, cucumbers, and apple juice and then rated it out of ten.
Meal Review
I walked into the cafeteria and sat my backpack down then got in line. The lunch lady was extremely nice and patient with the kids. I grabbed my plate and served myself, which didn’t smell the best. Once I sat down, I was ready to eat my meal. The pizza was adequate and mediocre. It had too much crust, too much sauce, and the cheese was not the best tasting. However it was not as bad as people made it to be. It still had some flavor due to the pepperoni. I was surprised that it is much healthier than a regular pizza since it wasn’t a huge jump from your average pizza. The apple juice was great. It tasted just like regular apple juice. On the other hand the cucumbers were not great. They tasted like solidified stale water. All together I gave the meal a 3.5/10 because the cucumbers were disgusting and I would much rather have had something else, but for healthy food it wasn’t bad and it still filled my stomach.
Next on Wednesday (September 26), I reviewed nachos with apple juice and an apple.
Meal Review
I walked in routinely and got in line. Somehow this lunch lady was somehow nicer than the previous one. I sat down and prepared for my meal. The nachos were good. They don’t taste bad, however the cheese was getting cold really fast and there really wasn’t much cheese on the one I got so they felt very dry, but they are still pretty good flavor wise. Usually I don’t have a lot of nachos but the portion I served was pretty big since they served it in a clear bowl. They had a variety of different beverage flavors to try like chocolate milk and different types of juices. My juice of choice was apple juice. For some reason the apple juice tasted a little different this time, but it still tasted good. The apple was good, but the outer layer tasted like chemicals. I don’t know if they were washed so that could be it because when I rinsed them a little bit they tasted better. All together I rate it 4/10. I personally prefer nachos over pizza because they taste like regular nachos. It’s not that high because the apple brought it down and so did the cold cheese with too much nacho chips. Still an okay meal
On Tuesday September 30th I went to the different lanes. These lanes offer different things everyday so it I had no idea what i was getting but I ended up having A baked potato with meat and cheese in the middle, bread, blueberry juice, some kind of soup, and an apple
Meal Review
I got my tray from the line that wasn’t too long and sat down. The baked potato was surprisingly good, however there was very little meat and cheese in the one I got so there was a lot of potato, but the potato was really soft inside so it wasn’t too bad. Next I tried the soup. This soup consisted of kidney beans, carrot shreds, tomato chunks, hominy, and some other stuff I could not make out. It was gross, the mixture just wasn’t the best. It was really random, odd looking, and smelling. The bread tasted mediocre; it was just regular wheat bread. The juice was really good but a little on the sour side which I would expect from blueberry juice. The apple was good this time. It was sweet and I actually liked it to the point I even ended up finishing it. Over all this was a 6.8/10. The baked potato really did it for me and everything else besides the soup wasn’t too bad.
Although school food is very looked down upon for defensible reasons it really isn’t all too bad. Some days the milk could come out chunky or the food may not be fully cooked but it’s surprisingly rare. The meals I had throughout the week somewhat filled my stomach and didn’t taste revolting. It’s important to consider school food has healthy ingredients so it obviously won’t taste like your run of the mill, home cooked meal. Overall I think people should try to accept school food a little more.
