Cosmetology is an elective class at Lubbock High School for 11th and 12th-grade students. In cosmetology class, students learn how to do nails, facials, and waxes, as well as the diseases they could carry. Students will learn how to treat and service both females and males as they learn many different styles of treatment. This class takes up a total of 4 periods your junior year and 3 periods your senior year. For students to get licensed at the end of their senior year, they must attend class every day and pass all of their classes. At the end of their senior year, students will have to take two stateboard tests: a written test and a 110-question test. Students must pass that and then move on to the second portion in March, which is a practical test. During this evaluation, students will perform the skills they have learned, on a mannequin in front of other people watching and grading you as you go. After passing both tests, students will be granted their cosmetology license and can begin working outside of school, during their cosmetology periods. This class is preparing many students for success in their careers and fueling their passions from a young age, preparing them for the working world. Senior Jazlyn Zavala stated that she thinks that this class is “preparing [her] to pursue [her] career in being a nail technician.” Students not only think that this class is preparing them for work, but they also enjoy the in-class aspects of the class. Senior Zoe Brehmer says that cosmetology is a “fun class and you make great friendships”.
