Every week, journalism and its students have been manufacturing articles for the yearbook and your enjoyment. In Journalism, they write articles such as the one that you are reading now from Tuesday to Thursday about topics such as classes, season recaps, and clubs or write UIL style stories based on a given prompt.
“First I look on the LISD website and try to learn as much as I can from there, and then I learn about students who are partaking in those activities and I go to interview them” said Kiren, explaining how he writes his news stories.
On Monday journalism students do a variety of activities like the history of photography and how to properly edit a news story and on Friday they take photos based on that week’s activity in “Photo Fridays”.
Meanwhile, debate has been doing very well, competing and winning in tournaments across the city.
In January they had two competitions; UIL State Congress and CX District and in February they participated in the National Qualifying Tournament in Lubbock.
Debate is mainly focused around preparing for tournaments; whether that be through research or creating speeches. They prepare for two types of debate; LD, where the students are trying to argue one side is right or wrong in cases of subjectivity, or CX, where they argue which position is most likely objectively right with the information given.
Our debate team is very successful; “We have placed top three in four sweepstakes. We’ve had 10 students qualify for State so far. We are probably the most successful at Lubbock High” said Debate Coach Andrew VandenOever.
