The girl’s wrestling team traveled to Canyon High for the district competition on January 30th. Their goal was to secure first place in each weight class for a chance to move on to the state tournament.
On Wednesday the team left Chapman High at 2:30 PM and arrived at Canyon High at 4:30, where they began to prepare for their competition ahead. After a long day of traveling they would check into their hotel around 7:30 PM, with their athlete curfew set for 9:00 PM and lights out at 10:00 PM to ensure rest. Their Thursday morning would start early, at 5:00 AM they would wake up and get ready. They left their hotel at 5:50 AM and arrived back at Canyon High by 6:20 AM. Weigh-ins began at 7:00, followed by the start of their actual wrestling at 8:00 PM. Our team fought hard and by the evening the matches would conclude around 8:00 PM. Their dinner would follow soon after. The team would begin their journey back to Chapman and arrive home by 11:00 PM.
Several team members did great, with Felicity Tarango (100 lbs), Maddie Peña (120 lbs), and Ariana Criado-Silvar (126 lbs) each winning first place in their respective weight classes. Further rounding out the team, Anela Anguiano (132 lbs) would place fifth. As the season is drawn to a close, these wrestlers will now focus on state competition, where they will have a chance to qualify for nationals.
