Varsity Volleyball won the home and district opener vs Caprock in 5 sets, starting off the season with an 1-0 district record.
The varsity team is currently 1-8 in district play with 5 total wins on the season. JV has had 7 wins so far, the sophomore team has had 3 wins and the 9th grade team has won 4 games.
The volleyball season started August 8th with 4 seniors leading the program. Taylor Waden, 12, expresses how her team dynamic has shifted so far throughout the season.
“As the season progressed we became closer as a family and those lines between grades and experience began to wither away” Waden said.
During the game against Caprock,Addisyn Moser, 11, led all hitters with 14 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and a dig. Jazline Astorga, 11, had 17 assists, 5 kills, 1 ace, and 15 digs. Braeley Muniz, 12, was steady from the back row tallying 28 digs, with 4 assists and 2 aces, even passing a 1.94.
“That was one of the most prideful experiences I have had with this program,” Waden said.
Gracen Brown, 11, and Taylor Waden both expressed that their favorite memory from this season was a tournament that took place in Denton. The varsity team went 3-5 that tournament.
“We all bonded better than ever at that tournament” Brown said.
Isrida Estrada, the head coach of the JV team, has detailed how she coaches her team by giving her athletes the confidence on the court and showing them that no matter what they have support behind them.
“I feel like everybody has a place on the team, everybody has a voice,” Estrada said.
Coach Estrada also likes to give titles and positions to her players to not only enforce their responsibilities, but create a warm and joyful environment.
“I nicknamed the back row the back row baddies,” Estrada said.
This season JV was able to beat Monterey at Monterey in 3 sets on September 5th. Abby Flores, 11, played that night.
“They expected us to lose but we didn’t” Flores said.
Abby Flores is an upperclassman who is able to lead her team and motivate them when they are down or needing encouragement.
“I’m pretty loud and the noise kind of picks you up,” Flores said.
Overall the program has completed half of their district play for the season and have expelled in their efforts. Players like Gracen Brown, Taylor Waden, and Abby Flores have expressed how excited they are for the second half of district.
“The fear of power dynamics has shaped a community into reliance on each other” Waden said.
