Mariachi De Oro competes at UIL State
The Lubbock High Mariachi De Oro traveled to Edinburg, Texas to compete against other high schools at the UIL State Competition. Mariachi De Oro came back with winning the second division at the competition along with earning Outstanding Performance. The Mariachi De Oro is led under the direction of Greg Cavasos.
According to Cavasos, the competition went extremely well and the trip was very successful. “The trip was fantastic,” Cavasos said. “Logistically, everything all worked out, such as funding and performance.”
Mariachi De Oro came home with winning second division, which is a significant improvement from the previous year. “The results were fair,” Cavasos said. “This competition is harshly graded and the results were very good. Better than last year.”
John Aguilar, a junior at Lubbock High, who’s approaching his third year in Mariachi De Oro, had a very good time on the trip. “It was really fun,” Aguilar said. “I had a great time with my friends.” Aguilar has intentions to continue with the Mariachi De Oro.
All in all, the trip was very successful, both with the competition, the trip and in general. According to Cavasos, he’s “extremely proud of the work” his students put in.
