October 29th was a day to remember for the Lubbock High Marching Band. After the announcement that they placed 1st in the UIL Area Finals, excitement shot through them. This was the 2nd time in school history the marching band has made it! As they prepared for state with Mr. Bayless, Mr. Rodriguez, and Mr. Galvin, they set off to San Antonio to compete. From November 5th to the 7th, the Westerner Marching Band went to perform their skills and ended up placing 35th at the Alamodome stadium. Even though our Westerners ended up coming last place, it just shows the hard work they went through to even make it. It was a big accomplishment for our school and shows that Westerners are achievers.
Talking to some of the students in the band showed how important state was to them. One of the students, Marissa Whitfill, a sophomore, explained that “Nothing compares to the feeling I felt when I found out we got first in the UIL area and we were going to state!” She was also happy to explain all about her experience with the whole trip and how she had an amazing time with her friends. Another student, Julius Infante, a junior, was asked if they felt that going to state changed how other schools see Lubbock High, and he said “I would say in a sense it kind of did, especially with other bands in Texas.” The students at Lubbock High and their peers are so proud to see each other doing great things!
