In November, the Lubbock High National Honor Society spent an afternoon at Maxey Park during The Love Day Park Clean-Up. Students walked around the perimeter of the lake and picked up trash around fences, dams, and just any trash they could find. Most students walked around with their friends in groups and mainly stuck to certain sections of the park, but tried to get as much trash as possible.
When asked if they enjoyed the event, Senior Hannah Gilchrest said “Yes! I enjoyed it because it allowed me to get outside in the fresh air with my friends!”
Many students were able to chat and catch up with friends while picking up trash, which made the experience a lot of fun.
When asked about their favorite part, Senior Sarah Rose said “It was so fun to spend time with my friends with my friends and do service! That’s what NHS is all about- doing service with your friends in a fun way!”
After doing this activity, many students thought differently about their trash and waste products. Junior Marissa Whitfill said, “After spending many devoted hours to help clean up the parks in Lubbock, it made me want to go home and recycle more to better the planet.”
Many students have taken an interest in continuing to help our community parks. Senior Aarya Patel said “These parks play a big part in bringing our community together. I’d love to contribute to maintain them and keep them clean.”
