This year, One Act Theatre UIL performs their play, Deep Blue Sound, by Abe Koogler.
The play is set in a small island town off the coast of Puget Sound, where the islanders are trying to discover why the local whales have suddenly disappeared. However, this play holds a much deeper meaning than what lies beyond the ocean’s surface.
In what the actors have described as a thrilling performance, the play follows three different storylines, each reflecting what it is like to feel loved, valued, and above all — isolated. It emphasizes the idea that you are never truly alone.
“It’s a timely piece, given everything that is going on in the world.” said theatre director, Zachery Kocurek-Gentry. “It’s easy to feel isolated and alone, but I think after watching Deep Blue Sound, you might not feel as alone anymore.”
One Act is currently working on constructing a basic outline of their play, this includes working on character movement, dialogue, and blocking.
Students and staff are working hard towards their goals for this year’s competition, which will take place at Lubbock Cooper, at the Zone Level, on March 7th. If they advance, they will have 3-4 more levels of competition before possibly advancing to State in Austin, TX.
“One Act takes a lot of hard work, and takes a toll on you as you put in many hours and dedication throughout the season,” said Annika Quirino. “Our shows tend to be very emotional, so learning how to become vulnerable and expanding my range and comfortability has helped me grow as an actress tremendously.”
