Join Esports, where there are more than a dozen games that you can play against fellow Westerners and other schools.
The class is taught by Dr. West and includes games such as: Age of Civilizations 6, Fortnite, Minecraft, League of Legends, Guilty Gear, Super Smash Bros, etc.
Esports is competitive; they train and have organized competitions with brackets and matchups.
“It’s not just playing games, it’s more about the competition. […] There is a massive difference between people playing in the NFL versus people playing Tag football. […] we’re more along the lines of playing High School Varsity football” Dr. West said.
Esports is more a collection of sports than a single sport. Teams all have specific tournaments, types of training, and work together as a single team by game.
The teams vary in size massively; Dr West only has one “Guilty Gear” player but can only play teams on “Marvel Rivals” of six people with 12-14 people in total. Practices vary based on teams.
Dr. West’s Apex team competes three times a week, and they get their practices before or after the match. Others usually meet together every week for practice.
The types of practices vary massively by game type.
“Strategy games typically require people to do research; the learning curve is more about understanding what your team can do and min-maxing in the time frame you have. […] While with First Person Shooters, we would really focus on learning your character, doing your aim training, and com’s training” says Dr. West.
To join, all you need to do is show up at Dr. West’s class in 1202. Joining is not about skill, it is about dedication.
