Lubbock High School celebrated the Lunar New Year. This celebration covers the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. To celebrate, the Mandarin Club hosted an event to teach families about the subject along with sharing information and details about the culture in a fun way.
The event started at 5:00 PM, the tables set up in an organized fashion, each one with their own posters explaining the activity or tables. Tickets were $6 via online purchase and 10$ upfront. With their tickets, people were given a map of each table. All of the money earned from this event went towards the Mandarin Department in Lubbock High so that the students would have supplies as well as funding for opportunities to host or participate in events like this one.
One of the many activities offered at this event was a game called Jianzi. This game is a simple one, where one must keep a weighted shuttlecock from falling to the ground by only using their feet and other body parts.
Many students from the Mandarin club were running these games, offering information and facts about them, some even dressed in traditional clothing. More activities included lantern riddles, paper cutting, and calligraphy. Along with these games and activities, visitors were given a checklist for each activity they completed. By the end of the evening, they’d be able to present their cards and earn a small prize. In addition to all the sweet activities, there was food and candy for visitors to try.
