Mr. Reeves is the college algebra and statistics teacher here at Lubbock High School, and I chose to interview him because of the kindness he spreads to each of his students. His apparent passion for teaching, which I have experienced firsthand, encourages students to excel in his classes. I asked Mr. Reeves some questions to understand how he approaches teaching better. Mr. Reeves enjoys “Seeing and hearing the student’s perspective.” and he also believes that “ It’s shocking when we realize that others are dealing with similar issues, see things the same way, or see things in a different way.” which is just so insightful and truthful. We never know what anyone is going through, so gaining perspective makes that notion easier to approach.
Mr. Reeves gave the following piece of advice to future educators: “Always prepare your lessons down to the smallest detail. Don’t forget to listen and talk to the students. Many times, they have something enlightening to share or have important things they need to communicate.” Hearing how articulate Mr. Reeves is when designing his lessons solidifies that he cares about his students and how his teaching impacts them. Lastly, Mr. Reeves mentioned that a quote that inspires him in his teaching practice is, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that is why it is called the Present.” which is by Master Oogway from the movie Kung Fu Panda. Understanding a bit more about how Mr. Reeves approaches his teaching practice was an honor and allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of his passion for teaching.
