The Lubbock High Westerner marching band has overcome many obstacles and tackled first place in many competitions. The LHS band traveled to Denver City, TX, where they accomplished first place in finals, also earning “best brass” and “best drum line”. The band achieved all ones in UIL Region which led them to advance to UIL Area where they acquired first place once again. Because of this accomplishment the marching band traveled to San Antono and went to state for the second time in school history. The first time being in 2018. The marching band head drum major, Samuel Sadus, 12, states “My favorite part of marching band is the moment where everyone contributes to the common goal of being our best. The days of performances where everyone is focused and everyone is good is the best part. Seeing the culmination of all of our hard work is amazing.”. Samuel shows how much of a true family the LHS Marching Band is. They undergo harsh practices in the heat and cold to bring trophies home.
Another student in band, Radhika Parekh, 10, also shows how much band has affected her life, “Band really occupied my time before and after school, but it definitely helped me learn skills like communication, leadership, and time management skills. Also, we’re better than everyone and their mama.”. This demonstrates how special and important marching band really is to the students, directors, and parents involved. Radhika expresses how band has truly become a community where everyone is treated the same. Both Samuel and Radhika want to continue band in college and for the rest of high school. Them and everyone else in marching band knows that band is a family within the Lubbock High community.
