At long last, the fabled Spurs game has returned!
It was once a long-standing tradition that the Westerners would face the Monterey Plainsmen to reclaim their stolen spurs. The first game ever to occur took place in the fall of 1956, Monterey wiped us out with a final score of Plainsmen-27 and Westerners-7.
According to the Monterey High School website, “to promote a friendly rivalry in this new situation, the two student councils and the administration designated the Silver Spurs as a trophy for the varsity football game.” Since that fateful day, we’ve been trying to win.
Two years ago the tradition seemed to stop, but now it’s back and Westerners, here’s what you can do to show your support:
- Go to the Varsity football game.
- Dress Up during the week for Dress Up Days.
- Go to the Pep Rally and scream your heart out
All in all, the tradition of Spurs is something that truly matters to us Westerners. Win or lose, show your support to our fantastic coaches, administration, student organizations, and our varsity football players.
