LHS 2020 Volleyball season

It’s December and our Lady Westerns just finished their 2020 volleyball season. This season four teams fought until the end and never gave up. Matthew Leesman, the head coach of Lubbock High Volleyball led the Varsity team through an amazing season. Under him are Krista Ford, Kortni McLain, Daniela Garcia-Frazier and Isidra Estrada. Ford coaches the all freshman squad. Estrada and Garcia coach the JV 2 team, which include freshman and sophomores. McLain coaches the JV squad along with the help of Estrada.

This season the Freshman team took the highest record in district play amongst all teams. They were led by Ford, who took up coaching volleyball after years of basketball. The Freshman team was known for their energy and happiness on the court. No matter how far behind they were, they would come back and get the win.

“Keep your foot on the gas pedal”, Ford would tell her players when fighting through a close game.

The Westerns JV and JV 2 team fought hard throughout the season. The teams would fight the whole game and improved drastically through the season. Garcia and McLain stood by their side during the whole season and the girls couldn’t have asked for better coaches.

This year Lubbock High’s Varsity team had 7 seniors and they took the team all the way to the end. The team went through so much this season and fought through it all.

“After everything we went through, these girls are family”, says one of their starting seniors.

The girls described the season as one they’ll never forget. Leesman, the head coach of the team, loved coaching these girls for 4 years.

All teams face setbacks, but with a Covid season, it made all the difference. No matter what, when you love something, you’ll do anything to be able to do it. This year’s volleyball season is one for the books.
